Franco Colapinto will start the Las Vegas GP from the pitlane after being given medical clearance by the FIA.
His Williams team will be able to field the spare FW46 chassis despite the obvious shortage of spares following the run of five accidents in Mexico and Brazil.
Colapinto had a huge crash late in Q2 after clipping an ape wall with his left front wheel and being launched into the wall on the other side of the track.
The impact was logged at 50G and led to a compulsory medical check. He later returned to his hotel without undertaking any media activities.
The scale of the damage led to speculation about whether or not the team could build up the spare car with the parts available after the huge effort required to get two cars to Las Vegas. However the team was able to complete the job overnight.
He qualified 14th but will now start from the pitlane, and that has also given the team the opportunity to make some setup changes.
A team statement said: “Following Franco’s incident in qualifying yesterday, he has undergone a thorough follow-up evaluation from the event medical team today and has been cleared to race in this evening’s Las Vegas Grand Prix.
“Franco’s health is our main priority, and we are relieved that he is well enough to race following such a significant incident. We thank the medical staff for prioritising Franco’s health and wellbeing and for the excellent care he received.
“We are extremely thankful to our incredible garage team for their hard work overnight to repair Franco’s car and our fans and partners for their continued support.
“We have taken the opportunity to make some set-up changes during the repair and, as a result, Franco will start the race from the pitlane. We are looking forward to going racing under the lights tonight.”
