Another box in the drivers’ market is being settled well in advance: Williams has announced the “multi-year” contract extension signed by Alex Albon. As has become increasingly common in recent times, the exact duration has not been specified, but the Anglo-Thai driver will certainly accompany the Grove team at the debut of the new technical regulations, scheduled to start in the 2026 season.
CORNERSTONE OF THE WILLIAMS REVIVAL PROJECT
Albon, therefore, becomes the driver on which Williams is banking for its project, which aims to bring the glorious team founded by Sir Frank back to being a team capable of fighting for podium places and world titles:
“I am incredibly happy to remain with Williams Racing and to continue to work with such a talented and dedicated team of people,” said Albon.
“It’s been a difficult start to the year, but since we joined Williams, we’ve made significant progress together, and I’ve seen the huge changes that are happening behind the scenes to bring us back to the forefront .”
Thanks to his performances last season, Albon’s name had returned to the centre of the driver market, with several top-tier teams showing interest in him. The signing with Williams demonstrates how the Grove team’s project is ambitious:
“This is a long-term project that I really believe in, and I want to play a key role, and that’s why I signed a multi-year contract. The journey will take time, but I am confident that we are building the right team to move forward and accomplish great things in the years to come .”
A ROLLER COASTER CAREER
After his F1 debut with Toro Rosso in 2019, Albon was promoted to Red Bull during the summer break to replace Pierre Gasly. The experience with the Milton Keynes team lasted throughout 2020 then, as too often happened for the youngsters of the Austrian academy, a rejection came that was probably too hasty. Albon spent 2021 on the bench as Red Bull’s third driver, before coming back to F1 the following year thanks to Williams.
With the Grove team, he returned to show his potential, and in 2023, with 27 points scored, he dragged the team to seventh place among the Constructors, the team’s best result since 2017. As his best finish in the race, he boasts two third places achieved during the 2020 season.

Albon’s central role in Williams’ revival project was also underlined by team principal James Vowles:
