Toto Wolff explains that broadly speaking, there are two types of driver profiles Mercedes can opt for. The Silver Arrows have a big decision to make before 2025. A combination of exciting prospects and established names are available on the market. For a team working to rebuild itself amidst a difficult period, their next decision is crucial.
In many ways, Toto Wolff might welcome the speculation surrounding the team’s driver line-up. Traditionally, the German constructor would dismiss any reports about a change to their selection. After all, there were no signs that either Lewis Hamilton or George Russell were on the way out. Prior to 2022, Mercedes were happy to keep a relatively ‘safe’ duo – where Valtteri Bottas reinforced Hamilton.
Of course, times have changed. With Hamilton’s departure to Ferrari, there is a vacancy at Brackley for 2025. More than any other time in recent memory, there are a plethora of high-profile drivers available in the market. Just last week, one of the biggest names, Fernando Alonso, signed a contract extension with Aston Martin.
Currently, the driver most strongly linked to the open Mercedes drive is Kimi Antonelli. It is understood that – given the team’s performance – the Silver Arrows believe they could promote the youngster in a relatively low-pressure environment.

MERCEDES EVALUATE TWO SCENARIOS
Toto Wolff echoed this sentiment to the media about a week ago when explaining the team’s options:
“It could mean putting a young driver in there, and giving him an opportunity with less pressure than fighting for victories immediately,” he explained in Japan.
“Or putting a more experienced driver in the car that can help us dig ourselves out of the current performance picture.”
Evidently, suggesting that a 17-year-old with less than a handful of F2 appearances is likely to enter Formula 1 is bold. However, the Mercedes team principal has been consistent in his appraisal of the young talent.
SuperLicense points will be no issue for Antonelli, so the focus will instead be his progression in the coming months. A series of tests in F1 machinery will help give the Silver Arrows a better picture of his abilities.
There is also the option that Toto Wolff opts for a more conservative line-up to give Antonelli more time to develop. However, there are no obvious indications that the Championship-winning team is looking for a stopgap.
In any case, Mercedes have a big question to answer about their next signing.
