F1 is a sport constantly in evolution, meaning that change is inherent in its DNA. However, not all changes are welcomed positively by the fans. One of the most contentious debates in Formula 1 is the presence of Sprint Races. This alternate weekend format has plenty of critics, but Stefano Domenicali wants to have more Sprints.
It is clear why F1 wants to press ahead with Sprint Races. Weekends that have two qualifying sessions (including one on Friday) inevitably generate more viewership. Committed and casual fans alike are more likely to tune in on Fridays with a Spring qualifying.
Of course, this does not mean Sprint Races weekends are popular. Instead, the positive numbers could point toward the commitment of existing fans – as opposed to Sprints actually attracting more viewership.
Domenicali makes stance on Sprint Races clear
Still, Stefano Domenicali is happy with Sprint formats. Speaking in an interview with AMuS, the F1 CEO outlined his perspective:
“That is the goal [to have more Sprints]. The numbers show us there is interest in this.
“Look at other sports. Football and basketball are played every other day. They entertain much more intensely.
“In terms of quantity, we have much less to offer. Yet, compared to other sports, we are doing very well and continue to grow.
“Every involved in our sport, in any way, should be happy with the situation.”

Drivers have already raised concerns about the presence of Sprint races. Lando Norris and Max Verstappen have pointed out how physically demanding these events are for team personnel.
Teams might also have some complaints, at least from a budgetary perspective. The issue of Sprint Races will be discussed in the upcoming months.
Moving forward, F1 faces important decisions about its future. Many would argue that making excessive changes will only alienate existing fans.
Current viewership numbers are strong, which can be attributed to a more competitive field above than everything else.
As ever, the off-track politics of Formula 1 will play a central role.
