This morning, AutoRacer broke the news of a new technical directive the FIA wants to introduce in 2025. The focus of this directive is the flexibility of the wings, something which generated plenty of discussion in 2024 – especially among the top teams.

At last year’s Belgian GP, the FIA introduced cameras to monitor the flexing of the front wings. The FIA’s Nikolas Tombazis told Motorsport that these tests would not undergo any changes in 2025. Despite this, discussion on this topic is far from over, due to the aerodynamic importance of these wings in performance.

According to information obtained by AutoRacer, the FIA has sent a draft of proposed changes to regulate front wing flexing.

This directive aims to further reduce the maximum flex allowed during static tests. This is what the FIA is thinking of using to control flex. It is understood that the technical directive could be valid as early as May.

FIA statements

Confirming what AutoRacer anticipated this morning, the FIA itself has issued a statement – confirming that this new directive is designed to promote fair and exciting racing:

Following further analysis carried out by the FIA Single Seater Department at the end of the 2024 season, we are committed to ensuring that body flexibility will no longer be a bone of contention for the 2025 season.

“As part of this commitment, we will increase the scope of rear wing testing from the start of the 2025 season, and additional front wing testing will be introduced from the Spanish GP.

“This phased approach allows teams to adapt without having to discard existing components unnecessarily.

“These adjustments are designed to further refine our ability to monitor and enforce body flexibility regulations, ensuring a level playing field for all competitors, with the aim of promoting fair and exciting competition.”
