“No reason to be negative” at Aston Martin – Mike Krack

Managing expectations is always a difficult exercise in F1. Team principals must navigate the fine line between managing expectations and also conveying a sense of ambition. This task has become increasingly difficult for Mike Krack. With Aston Martin falling dramatically down the order, Krack insists there is no reason to panic.

From an objective perspective, the last twelve months have been a failure for Aston Martin. They had the second-fastest car at the beginning of 2023 and, unlike Ferrari or Mercedes, did not have fundamental issues with their concept.

Aston were also in a far better place than McLaren, who started the year in the midfield.

Despite all these factors, the Silverstone-based team fumbled their advantage. They failed to make meaningful improvements mid-season, with their winter development heading into 2024 ultimately failing to make up for lost time.

Considering that McLaren, Ferrari and Mercedes have all closed the gap to Red Bull, it is easy to imagine what might have been for Aston Martin.

Krack: Aston Martin have reasons to be encouraged

In any case, team principal Mike Krack sees things differently:

“It’s the constant juggling between expectation management and the expectations you raise, including what we achieved last year,” motorsport-total quotes him as saying.

“Back then, we massively exceeded expectations. That’s how we’re measured today. That’s why we need to put this year in the right light a bit…

“This development can go up or down, depending on what the competition is doing. It’s like the stock market. But you have to keep your eye on the goal.

“We have a plan on how we develop the team, also from an infrastructure point of view. We have great partners coming in with Honda, we have a great partner with Aramco.

“So I think there is no reason to be negative.”

Understandably, the 52-year-old wants to keep a positive perspective. Motivating the team and showing confidence in the path forward are necessary aspects of his responsibility.

Still, the disappointment at Aston Martin’s trajectory is difficult to disguise. Team boss Lawrence Stroll certainly is not happy with the situation, as reports in recent weeks have revealed.

Krack, much like Technical Director Dan Fallows, is under pressure to reverse the decline at Silverstone.
