The F1 World Championship heads to the ninth round of 2024, which promises to be a critical one. The Barcelona circuit, due to the completeness of the track, will be a litmus test for teams. On both a technical and performance front, the Spanish circuit is an important reference. Because of this, the upgrades introduced this weekend will be under a magnifying glass. Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu has spoken on this topic and the significance of this weekend.
Important weekend for Haas: Bearman returns to the track in FP1
The Spanish GP will allow teams to assess the changes introduced in recent events:
“Spain is the first circuit since we introduced our updates to have high-speed corners, so I’m looking forward to evaluating our update on that circuit and seeing what it will be like.”
Ayao Komatsu explains that the upcoming triple-header will test the team on all fronts. This means that teams cannot allow lapses in concentration:
“A triple header is always quite difficult. Luckily, a lot of our team is based in the UK, so it helps that the last race of this triple header is right there. But it’s still very difficult.”
Efficiency and concentration are the two factors Komatsu wants to address moving forward. The Japanese engineer believes that deficiencies in these areas were costly in Canada, where the team missed out on points.
Oliver Bearman will also return to action in Barcelona and will take to the track in FP1 in place of Nico Hulkenberg, after the session he took part in in Imola.
The Briton will also be involved in the sixth stage of the F2 championship, awaiting possible movements on the drivers’ market, precisely in the Haas orbit.
Hulkenberg and Magnussen’s impressions
The ingredients on the table on the eve of the Spanish GP weekend are not few, as are the pitfalls, which, however, only add motivation to the riders, as Nico Hulkenberg explained.
“It’s one of the classic circuits. Obviously, it’s a high-speed circuit, and I think it will be very hot there this year.
“I expect there will be very warm Spanish temperatures.”
The German driver continued the theme of emphasising the importance of upcoming races:
“I like triple-headers. We have had them for a few years now, and June is the month in which things get quite challenging.”
Teammate Kevin Magnussen shared a similar enthusiasm:
“It’s one of the best-known tracks among all the riders, probably the one I’ve done the most laps on of all.”
The Danish driver underlined that whilst Spain is a well-known track, there have been recent modifications.
“There are a lot of high-speed corners, and it can be quite difficult to overtake.
“It’s improved, the track is more fun after they removed the last chicane, and this also helped to overtake a bit, so hopefully we can be competitive.”
