Audi still “monitoring the market” for second 2025 signing

Audi is still evaluating their options for 2025, with Andreas Seidl explaining that nobody has been written off. The Hinwil-based squad is under the full ownership of the German brand, and this is already being reflected in their decisions. Audi is already stamping its influence on Sauber’s driver lineup, agreeing to a multi-year deal with Nico Hulkenberg. The question now is who will drive alongside the 36-year-old.

Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu would not have been thrilled about Hulkenberg’s announcement last week. Inevitably, his arrival means that at least one of them will leave Sauber at the end of the season. However, both drivers could also be replaced.

Carlos Sainz is a well-established target who still has an offer on the table. Therefore, some might interpret Hulkenberg’s confirmation as an indication for the Spaniard to speed up his response to Audi’s offer.

Simultaneously, this news will incentivise the Bottas and Zhou to explore options elsewhere on the grid. They were surely already aware of the need to hold talks with other teams several months ago. After all, Seidl’s interest in Hulkenberg has been well-established for months.

Still, there can be no doubts that Bottas and Zhou are fighting for their F1 careers.

Audi considering all options

Despite this increasingly precarious climate, Andreas Seidl explains that both drivers are still in contention of earning an extension:

“We are continuing to have discussions here, monitoring the market – and of course also the performance of Zhou and Valtteri,” he told AMuS, as quoted by motorsport-total.

Ultimately, Zhou and Bottas are still good options for the team. They have proven reliable drivers over the last two seasons, delivering strong results in often underwhelming machinery.

Still, they might struggle when compared to other big names in the market. This year’s C44 has shown underwhelming pace in 2024. Given the nature of the F1 grid this season, points are very difficult to come by.

Moreover, pit-stop errors and other operational mistakes will complicate things for the Sauber duo. At a time when they need to convince other F1 teams they deserve a seat, their machinery is lacking.
