Ocon and Gasly could emerge as key players in the F1 market

Few would have Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon to be active players in the 2024 driver market last season. For all intents and purposes, the French outfit enjoyed a reasonable – though far from exceptional – campaign. Both drivers claimed a podium finish for Alpine, with Ocon’s coming in Monaco and Gasly’s in Zandvoort. However, these highlights were overshadowed by Aston Martin and McLaren – who outdeveloped Alpine and established themselves as front-runners.

Whilst seeing two customer teams surge ahead was a difficult pill to swallow, 2024 presents a far worse scenario.

The A524 showed signs of life in Shanghai, especially in race trim. Esteban Ocon (running the only upgrades available last weekend) was within touching distance of the points. He proved capable of matching immediate rivals Haas and RB – a welcome change from the first four rounds.

ALPINE LONG-TERM POTENTIAL IN QUESTION

However, this improved form does not change the team’s overall decline. In almost a decade, Renault/Alpine have failed to climb the field and compete for major hours. Considering the F1 budget cap – and the team’s status as an engine manufacturer – this is slightly underwhelming.

It would be a stretch to suggest that Ocon and Gasly are already on their way out from Alpine. However, a scenario where both drivers renew their contracts with the French squad is still plausible.

At the same time, the Enstone team’s pairing should have options elsewhere. Indeed, the two Grand Prix winners have been mentioned as candidates on Audi’s shortlist – which could become relevant if Carlos Sainz decides against joining the German brand.

To be clear, they are not the front-runners to join Audi. Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz are the two priority signings at Hinwil. Still, it is worth noting that Ocon and Gasly are drivers with a combination of speed, relative youth and experience. These qualities will make them valuable in the market.

Although Audi is not a guaranteed step up, they represent a viable alternative if confidence in Alpine’s project is running out.

At this year’s pre-season launch, Ocon was quick to remind journalists of his Mercedes ties. Although he is not considered a main contender to join the Silver Arrows these comments are indicative that all options will be explored.

In the next few months, decisions will start being made regarding 2025. For all those looking to secure new contracts, it will be critical to deliver strong performances and stay vigilant for any opportunities.
