Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu confirms the American outfit has taken measures to strengthen their mid-season development. Unlike previous seasons, the US team has no intentions of falling backwards and losing out to rivals. Upgrades will arrive sooner than expected, with the team identifying a “clear” path to improve the VF-24.
When first promoted to the position of team principal, Komatsu was quickly confronted with the issue of upgrades. After all, this is an area where rivals have consistently outperformed Haas throughout the years. The Japanese engineer offered his solution to resolve this problem:
“We’re making changes to the organizational structure on the technical side to ensure that whatever we’re finding out on the track translates into car development.
“If you look at the organizational structure previously, there isn’t a clear path to close the loop on that side. Everything that’s found trackside, there’s now a closed loop going into the aero, wind tunnel and CFD departments.”
These comments are consistent with the inherent limitations Komatsu and his team face. With Gene Haas unwilling to invest further in the team, the 48-year-old’s role is to ensure his team maximises its available resources. Efficiency, therefore, is the priority ahead of major projects to improve infrastructure or simulation tools.

HAAS MAKE CHANGES FOR 2024
In the early rounds of 2024, Haas can be credited with notable improvements to their operational execution. The team’s strategy calls and pit stops have been smooth and contributed to their points results in Saudi Arabia and Australia.
However, the topic of upgrades – or lack thereof – is separate from race-to-race optimisation. On this topic, Komatsu also offered a solution in his first interview as team principal:
“Now, at least even if there’s a disagreement, everyone is clear about why we’re developing the car in a certain way. That’s one key reason why we haven’t been able to put upgrades on the car and fall back in the season.
“We’re now already working in that way and there’s much better transparency, openness, and communication. Therefore, I believe we have a much better chance of upgrading the car properly this year.”
According to information released to Haas+ members, the VF-24 already has a defined upgrade plan. In a very different fashion from last year’s campaign, the American team is confident about how to unlock more performance from their package.
Even more encouragingly, Komatsu has outlined that his personnel are “going to bring upgrades earlier, which is a change for the team.”
Of course, Haas F1 still lacks the budget and infrastructure needed to completely revolutionise its approach. Therefore, the team’s development programme should be relatively modest compared to others in the field.
Still, these developments are certainly encouraging. The likes of Alpine, Sauber and even Williams are hardly in the best position themselves. As rivals stumble, there is an opportunity for Haas to capitalise.
