As previously reported, Ford has confirmed it will join Formula 1 in the 2026 season.

The American brand will partner with Red Bull for the next major regulation changes, marking a new era for both parties in Formula 1.

Speculation about a partnership between Ford and Red Bull has been circulating for several months, so this announcement validates these reports.

However, it is important to highlight the specifics of how these giants will work together in F1.

Ford’s partnership with Red Bull will see its branding on the team’s power units from 2026, as they provide some financial support in the development of Red Bull’s engine.

Red Bull has already invested significantly in developing its own power units, so Ford will act as a form of supplementary assistance in their progression.

Whilst Ford can have some degree of technical input, the most important element of this partnership relates to the marketing opportunities available.

The decision to return to F1 was motivated by the sport’s growth – especially in America – over the last few seasons, in addition to the emphasis on sustainability for 2026.

Like many manufacturers, Ford hopes to better understand electrical energy over the coming years.

The substantial increase in the electrical aspect of F1’s 2026 engines, therefore, has served as an essential catalyst for this partnership.

F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has given his thoughts on Ford’s entry into the sport:

“The news today that Ford is coming to Formula 1 from 2026 is great for the sport, and we are excited to see them join the incredible automotive partners already in Formula 1.

“Ford is a global brand with an incredible heritage in racing and the automotive world, and they see the huge value that our platform provides with over half a billion fans around the world.

“Our commitment to be Net Zero Carbon by 2030 and to introduce sustainable fuels in the F1 cars from 2026 is also an important reason for their decision to enter F1.”
