Valtteri Bottas is negotiating with a few teams on the grid, confident that he will secure a contract for F1 next season. Since the very beginning of the season, the Finn has shown unwavering belief that he belongs in the paddock. His conditions for a new deal, much like when he departed Mercedes, include being part of a project for an extended period.
For both Sauber drivers, there has been little to celebrate this year. A combination of operational shortcomings and generally underwhelming pace have characterised the Hinwil team’s campaign. With Alex Albon claiming points for Williams in Monaco, Sauber are the only team yet to score points in 2024.
This is a particularly significant development for Zhou Guayu, who is fighting for his future in Formula 1. However, the situation is slightly difference for Bottas – whose accolades over the last decade give him more credit in the bank. Team principals recognise his wealth of experience and consistency.
Indeed, the 10-time race winner has been linked with several names for 2025. Williams is emerging as one of the most likely options, although nothing concrete is decided at this stage.
BOTTAS HAPPY WITH CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS
In media interviews, Valtteri Bottas has outlined the current state of contract talks:
“Of course, being a free man – let’s say – you want to look at all the options… Discussions still going on in different directions. But yeah, things are getting step by step closer to where I would like them to be.”
“Wherever I end up being next year, needs to be a place where they can respect what I can do – both on and off track.”
For most drivers in the midfield, the next few months will be critical. There are some who will already be close to an agreement for 2025, whilst others will need strong on-track performances to boost their market value.
It is likely that Bottas will continue in F1 next season. His experience and accolades are enough to give him realistic possibilities for next season, even with a relatively uninspiring car. However, nothing is guaranteed.
With Red Bull close to renewing Sergio Perez’s contract, Carlos Sainz could become a priority target for many midfield teams. This could change the calculus of free agency, forcing the likes of Valtteri Bottas to respond.
