Mick Schumacher is likely out of contention for a seat in 2024, especially after Zhou Guanyu’s new contract extension. This F1 news has significant implications for the driver market, not just in Formula 1 but also in other categories also. As formu1a.uno reported last week, Schumacher has options in other Championships.
Irrespective of whether Schumacher is deserving of an F1 contract, he is a highly capable racing driver. Other categories, including WEC, IndyCar and Formula E, would all value a driver of his calibre.
Stoffel Vandoorne and Antonio Giovinazzi are examples of drivers that found success beyond Formula 1.
Furthermore, even the likes of Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz have admitted that competing in an event such as the 24hrs of Le Mans would be a huge achievement.
Speaking of this topic, Mick Schumacher is reportedly in line to drive for Alpine in their 2024 LMDh programme for WEC – the World Endurance Championship.
Various German outlets, including AMuS and BILD, have provided details on the German’s “plan B” for the next step of his career.
This would put Schumacher in the iconic 24 hours of Le Mans race next season. Furthermore, it would provide a platform for the youngster to build a career in Endurance racing.
In theory, Williams still represents a glimmer of hope in Formula 1. Unfortunately for the 24-year-old, this is a speculative hope at best and already a foregone conclusion at worst.
With that said, a contract with Alpine – a manufacturer team with two seats in Formula 1 – can only be positive.
It would be a stretch to start hypothetical scenarios where a WEC seat could lead to an F1 drive. After all, WEC is a reputable and high-calibre series in its own right.
Regardless, if Schumacher’s move is confirmed, it will add to the excitement and popularity of Endurance racing for 2024.
