Mick Schumacher criticises Guenther Steiner: I didn’t get support

Mick Schumacher argues that Guenther Steiner did not provide a healthy environment for his development in F1. The 24-year-old believes his growth was negatively impacted by the management at Haas.

The American outfit decided against renewing Schumacher’s contract at the end of last season, ending what became quite a drawn-out contract saga.

Kevin Magnussen’s late arrival gave the German driver a greater challenge to overcome, leading to greater pressure from Haas to see improved performances.

Although few could criticise Nico Hulkenberg for his speed since returning in 2023, there are some who believe Schumacher could never show his talent.

At the same time, some argue that drivers of a similar or even greater ability (i.e. Wehrlein, Vandoorne) were also victims of the ruthless F1 driver market.

Several months into his time as Mercedes reserve, the former Formula 2 Champion reflects on his time with Haas:

“I can see now how it should be. My two years [in F1] didn’t show me that.

“[You cannot] assume a driver will perform at his best if you don’t support him in the right way,” he told Sky Sports Germany.

“People will never hand you the flowers; you have to pick them yourself. I know that now.

“I now feel very ready to attack again and to show what I can really do.”

Assessing the options available on the grid next season, Schumacher admitted there are few realistic openings.

Still, with Toto Wolff almost certainly investigating any potential opportunities for the German, he remains ambitious:

“There isn’t much movement at the moment. Many drivers are already set.

“Getting into Formula 1 was the first goal. The second goal, becoming World Champion, is still open.”

There are only a handful of undecided seats for the 2024 grid. Even then, none of the currently unconfirmed drivers are under imminent threat.

Regardless of how heavily Alfa Romeo is considering alternatives to Zhou, for example, there is nothing to suggest Schumacher is first in line as a replacement.

The same can be said for Logan Sargeant, who will be given time by James Vowles and Williams to progress in the remaining nine rounds.
