Liam Lawson believes he can do “better job” in upcoming rounds

The Italian GP was Liam Lawson’s first full F1 weekend, called up by AlphaTauri to replace Daniel Ricciardo. After a strong debut in Zandvoort, the 21-year-old made an impressive step forward with the AT04 at the temple of speed.

Adapting to Formula 1 is a difficult process, one that only drivers with significant talent can overcome. This is especially true given the circumstances that Lawson joined the grid, jumping into an AlphaTauri in round 13 of the season.

Pre-season testing and winter preparation are luxuries the SuperFormula driver has enjoyed in 2023. However, the youngster is already giving Red Bull a headache for their driver lineup next season.

Red Bull has three valuable assets (Tsunoda, Lawson and Ricciardo) to accommodate for next season, provided that Perez keeps his seat.

In a review of the Italian GP, Lawson explained that – despite securing a respectable P11 result – there are areas to improve:

“A couple of things went wrong today. We need to look into the start, as I could have done a better job, and that’s where we lost the chance.

“The pace wasn’t too bad then, but the race slightly got away from us.

“I’m still learning the procedures and definitely starting to feel more comfortable in the car.

“But I’m just a little bit disappointed with my race, as I think we may have had the pace for points today.

“I’m not sure, though, so we need to look into it. These races are longer than I’m used to, so definitely adjusting.

“But I felt much more prepared than I did last weekend, so I’m happy about that.”

Given the struggles several rookies have encountered in recent years, Lawson’s current form is very encouraging.

Whilst Ricciardo recovers from injury, there will be more opportunities for Lawson to grow.
