Guenther Steiner explains that Haas will work to bring upgrades to the VF-23 in the remainder of 2023. Before focusing on next season, the Haas boss emphasises the importance of understanding this year’s package.
Mid-season development has been a significant issue at Haas for several years, with a limited budget and lack of infrastructure proving significant limiting factors.
Nico Hulkenberg called for the team to introduce upgrades after the Belgian GP, explaining that points will be hard to achieve without unlocking more performance in upcoming rounds.
Tyre degradation persists as the biggest problem for the American team in 2023, with strong qualifying performances often turning into frustrating results on Sunday.

Simply put, Haas goes from a competitive team on Saturday to one of the slowest on Sunday. The team faced a similar predicament in 2019, when tyre-related woes also cost the team over a race distance.
In a bid to maintain P7 in the constructors, Guenther Steiner has outlined that new parts will arrive at the VF-23:
“We have got some upgrades coming for Zandvoort on the brake ducts and front wing.
“But the team is working flat out to make some modifications to the car, which will be coming later on in the year.
“I can’t give an exact timeline because of the shutdown [during the summer break].
“We keep on working, and there are two reasons for this. Firstly, to try and make the car go quicker as you always do with upgrades.
“But also to know the direction for the VF-24, which is as important, if not more important.
“There’s a lot of hard work going on. It’s almost as intense as being in December developing the new car.”
As Steiner mentioned, the key is not necessarily to find more performance. Instead, the focus will be to understand why tyre degradation is so severe on the VF-23.
This understanding will be crucial for Haas to attain. Only by addressing this issue can they develop over the winter break with any confidence that 2024 will not see the same problems re-surface.
