F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has made no secret that historic circuits do not have guaranteed places on the calendar, as reports about 2024 continue to circulate.
The circuit whose future is currently most uncertain is Belgium’s Spa Francorchamps, with organizers still looking for a new contract extension with Formula 1.
Despite the Belgian GP’s extensive history and popularity among the fans, it has struggled to solidify its future within the sport over recent years.
Increased funding has given event organizers renewed hope about its F1 future, although there are still no guarantees Spa will feature on next year’s calendar.
South Africa’s Kyalami is also vying for a slot, with only one space left for these two Grand Prix under the terms of the Concorde agreement.
As quoted by motorsportweek, Domenicali has touched upon some of the recent speculations:
“It’s no secret we are still seeing if there’s a chance to go to Africa – it’s the only continent missing.
“When historic [venues] are only looking behind, there’s something that’s not good.
“When the historic [circuits have] a good foundation to look ahead with a different future, that’s beautiful.
“That’s why with the so-called historic Grand Prix, we are focused on understanding what is their view of the future.
“To be arrogant and believe that you have a granted race because you had a race for 100 years, to be very honest, is not enough.”
There is still plenty of time until anything definitive will emerge about next year’s calendar, although it seems clear which circuits are competing for the final spot.
Spa losing its place on the calendar would certainly be an unpopular decision, but Domenicali seems determined to execute his vision irrespective of any backlash.
Therefore, with the 2023 season still in its infancy, there is plenty of time for more developments on the F1 calendar.
