Alex Albon was a breakout driver in Formula 1 last season, enjoying almost unanimous praise across the paddock. In the next twelve months, he is expected to become a key piece in the driver market puzzle.
To end the year, Formula 1 published two sets of driver rankings. One was based on votes from the drivers, whilst the other came from team principals.
Albon was ranked highly in both lists – 7th in the driver rankings and 8th according to the judgement of team bosses. This is just some of the evidence pointing toward the Williams driver’s value.
The last two seasons have been critical for the 27-year-old, whose F1 career was in jeopardy after Red Bull replaced him in 2020.
His move to Williams certainly wasn’t the most highly anticipated development, but it was crucial nonetheless.
After spending two years in a highly pressurised environment (following limited preparation), Albon joined a far healthier situation with the Grove-based outfit.
Since making his debut for Williams in 2022, he has been responsible for the vast majority of their points. In last season’s campaign, Albon’s 27 points were instrumental in Williams finishing the season 7th overall.
Whilst podiums and race wins aren’t currently attainable at James Vowles’ team, they offer stability and patience. These are highly sought-after qualities among the grid.
Returning to the upcoming transfer market, Albon is expected to be a key player.
The most straightforward scenario involves the Thai continuing with Williams and signing a contract extension. Provided the British team sustains its progression, it seems reasonable this partnership will go beyond 2024.
Still, it is worth exploring Albon’s potential alternatives. His efforts in recent years have raised his market value, a potential door into talks with teams further up the grid.
Trying to predict a blockbuster move is largely unhelpful at this stage. There is nothing concrete to suggest precisely which teams will pursue the Williams driver.
However, there are mounting reports that interest exists in the paddock. Assuming an upward trajectory of performances and results in 2024, interesting discussions could develop over the summer.
F1 contract decisions can often be triggered by a single domino event. For Alex Albon, the best course of action will surely involve keeping his options open.
Depending on how events unfold, some exciting opportunities might present themselves.
